Moana Rua / Lake Pearson
In the Canterbury high country there is a long narrow stretch of water called Lake Pearson. Hills and mountains rise on both sides and when the wind drops you can see their shapes mirrored across the surface.
This piece is called Lake Pearson and is presented through a minimalist composition. It is 630 × 630 mm and framed by hand in American white ash. It sits within the Artisan Collections category and its scale suits a feature wall, a mantel, or a grouping with two or three related works.
Crafted from plaster and twine, the work uses the contrast between these materials to reflect the move from thick marsh to open lake. There is a textured black surface and the hand laid twine in the centre follows the outline of Lake Pearson. Diagonal lines in the plaster suggest wind and the shadows of clouds passing over the water. This work keeps a balance between raw material and fine detail and its organic form keeps it closely tied to the landscape it comes from.
Lake Pearson invites you to line up your own memories with the overall outline, noticing where the narrows and bends match what you recall. It brings a grounded, physical link to the landscape, so the lake is not just remembered but felt.
At its core, Lake Pearson is a reminder of places in nature that act as anchors for memory and reflection.
