Along the Christchurch coastline, the New Brighton Pier stretches out over the water in a long, steady line. Its arches and supports move toward the horizon, and on clear days the sea reflects the structure in broken patterns.

This piece is called Pier and is presented through a minimalist composition. It measures 63cm and is framed in a simple profile that keeps the focus on the form of the pier. Made from plaster and thread, the work uses the contrast between these materials to reflect the meeting of structure and sea. The plaster surface has natural variations, and the hand-laid thread forms the outline and length of the pier. The direction of the fibres follows the long perspective of the walkway, and the angled marks across the base suggest tidal movement and reflection.

The piece holds a clear balance between material and detail. The familiar lines of the pier allow viewers to bring their own experiences of the place, whether walking its length, watching the weather shift, or listening to waves below. Pier holds the pull of the coastline and the steady act of walking out over the water, inviting a quiet moment of looking, pausing, and being carried forward by the line of the sea.
