Remarkable
In Central Otago, the Remarkables stretch out in a long, saw-toothed line, shifting in colour and shape as the light moves across them. Below, the land is marked by terraces, waterways, and patterns formed over time. This piece is called Remarkable and is presented in a minimalist way. It measures 63 x 63cm and is framed in a simple profile so the focus stays on the terrain itself. Made from plaster and thread, the work uses colour and direction to map the contours of the range and the land in front of it. Warm threads trace the mountain ridges, cooler tones shape the water and flats, and the angled lines through the foreground show the divisions and paths that run across the landscape. The plaster surface anchors the whole piece, giving each thread a place to sit and define the form beneath it. The balance between material and detail keeps the landscape recognisable. The outline of the Remarkables leaves space for personal memories of the region, whether that’s changing seasons, distant views, or time spent nearby. At its heart, Remarkable is shaped by the pull of mountain country and the way its forms stay with us long after we’ve left the landscape behind.
