Rune
Outside of Christchurch there is a hillside of sculpted limestone rocks called Castle Hill. The Dalai Lama once called it a spiritual centre of the universe and I imagine the boulders holding old stories in their cracks and crevices.
This piece is called Rune. It is framed and compact at 35 × 35cm. It sits within the Shelf Statements category which makes placement simple on a shelf, in a niche or as part of a small grouping. I’ve kept the colour restrained so the light and shadows define the organic textures and it brings a sense of history and mystery through its texture and form.
I began Rune in the last light of the day and it came together slowly. A crack is painted gold like sunlight shining through rock and a grid feels like a coded language, hinting that there is something deeper underneath it all. It reads as a meeting point between the apparent randomness of nature and the mathematical patterns that underlie life.
Rune is meant to invite you in. Its surface makes you want to look closer and maybe even reach out and touch it. It can give a blank wall personality while still keeping things clean and modern.
At its core, Rune holds an emotional connection, reflecting the human urge to find meaning in stone and symbol.
